our little mermaid | madison children’s photographer

Eliza has always loved the water. As a toddler, she would jump fearlessly and joyfully into the pool’s deep end. She will lounge in the bathtub for hours if allowed. Water parks are her very favorite places in the WORLD. She swims like a fish and would prefer life under the water if only she could figure out a way to grow gills.

So when she expressed an interest in joining a swim team in our area this summer, it made complete sense. Last night she tried on the team suit, goggles and much-coveted swim cap together for the first time. Witnessing this, I became immediately struck with how disheartening it was that she didn’t believe she looked like the sassiest, fastest, coolest thing ever in her new duds. I know it must be obvious to you all how painfully shy Eliza is and you will, I’m sure, join me in hoping that someday she will find a way out of her shell. Clearly, the poor child has absolutely no self-confidence. Sad, really. Please join me now in a big group sigh…

giving is awesome, part 2

I know, I know…I’m a little behind with the announcement of my Giving is Awesome winner (first blogged about here). I appreciate your patience and loyalty and now, drumroll please…our winner! Her name is Carole, and she was nominated by her younger sister Kathy (who also happens to be my sister-in-law!). I was so moved to receive an unexpected and beautiful letter from Kathy describing why she feels her big sister deserves this gift.

Part of the letter reads: “This September will be 2 years since Carole was first diagnosed with multiple myeloma [a cancer of the plasma cell]. She went through stem cell transplants a year ago  and has been doing really well until just recently. The chemo is affecting her now, so the doctors are trying other types, but so far nothing is bringing it under control.” She describes her beloved sister as “our Switzerland. No matter what, Carole is always there for us other kids and she mothers the rest of us (to our annoyance sometimes!). I am very lucky to have her.”

Kathy goes on to share her great wish that Carole, her son and daughter, and 3 grandchildren (“two really adorable boys and a little princess”) enjoy the gift of time with each other. I truly share her belief that beautiful images of this family together, celebrating their love and hope, would be treasured forever.

We are trying to work out the details for our session, as Carole, her family and I are spread out across the state. Her day-to-day health is unpredictable, and she was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital last week. She will hopefully go home sometime in the next few days. Prayers for continued strength and healing for Carole would be greatly appreciated.  I am very much looking forward to spending time with this strong, devoted and deserving family sometime soon.

Thanks, Kat, for sharing your sister’s heartfelt and inspirational story with me. It’s obvious that she’s lucky to have you, too. And so am I.

s is for… | madison children’s photographer

Simon’s preschool “homework” assignment the other day was to bring in something that starts with the same letter as your first name. His choice, you ask? Why, SQUISHY DINOSAUR, of course.

I love four.

big boy brayden | madison children’s photographer

This sweet and busy little man had celebrated his 1st birthday with family and friends the day before our session, resulting in a very important, fun, EXHAUSTING weekend for him and his parents! I had last seen Brayden at his [preemie] newborn photo shoot, and man oh man, what a difference those months have made. This funny and determined child loves to motor around and definitely knows what he wants: Daddy’s keys and the remote. Put those things in his tiny hands, and magic happens!  Thanks so much, Angela and Chris, for entrusting me with the great honor of documenting the beauty and growth in your baby boy’s life once again. It was a true pleasure and I can’t wait to see what Mr. Brayden is up to as a 2-year-old!

I always enjoy observing a toddler “reading” books…let the destruction begin!
